THE NES: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The Nintendo Entertainment System arrived in North America in 1985 carrying the weight of an entire industry on its cartridge slot. After the 1983 market crash had wiped out Atari and left retailers refusing to stock video games, Nintendo rebuilt consumer trust through strict quality control, a lockout chip that blocked unlicensed games, and a mascot — Mario — who became the most recognizable fictional character on earth. The NES ran on an 8-bit Ricoh 2A03 processor and could display 54 colors simultaneously. By 1988 it commanded over 90% of the North American console market. Every console that followed — SNES, Genesis, PlayStation — exists because the NES proved the home gaming market was worth fighting for.

THE GENESIS: 16-BIT REBELLION

Sega's Genesis launched in North America in 1989 as the first 16-bit console to reach American homes, powered by a Motorola 68000 CPU clocked at 7.67 MHz. Its hardware was faster than the NES in raw processing terms, and Sega made sure every consumer knew it. The Genesis's FM synthesis sound chip produced a distinctive, punchy audio signature — harder and louder than Nintendo's softer tones — that perfectly matched Sega's edgier brand identity. Where Nintendo built a walled garden, Sega built an attitude. The Genesis would go on to sell approximately 30 million units worldwide, peaking at 55% of the North American 16-bit market in 1992 before the tide turned.

THE SNES ARCHITECTURE

Released in North America in 1991, the Super Nintendo built on the legacy of the NES with a Ricoh 5A22 processor clocked at 3.58 MHz and a custom graphics chip capable of producing 32,768 colors. Its Mode 7 scaling effect — which allowed flat textures to be rotated and stretched to simulate 3D perspective — dazzled players in games like F-Zero and Super Mario Kart. Cartridge storage meant instant load times, but capped game size and drove up retail costs. The SNES represented the pinnacle of 2D gaming hardware engineering.

THE SEGA SATURN: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

The Sega Saturn launched in North America in May 1995 at $399 — a full $100 more than the PlayStation — in a surprise announcement that blindsided retailers and developers who had not been given time to prepare software for it. Its dual-CPU architecture was powerful but notoriously difficult to program for, and most third-party developers chose the simpler, cheaper PlayStation instead. The Saturn sold only 9.5 million units worldwide, a catastrophic underperformance that effectively ended Sega's competitiveness in the 32-bit era. It stands as one of the most cautionary tales in hardware launch history: a technically capable machine destroyed by pricing, timing, and a failure to understand what developers and consumers actually needed.

THE PS1 REVOLUTION

Sony's PlayStation, released in Japan in 1994 and North America in 1995, represented a quantum leap. Its 32-bit MIPS R3000A CPU, dedicated 3D geometry transformation engine, and CD-ROM drive gave developers tools the industry had never seen. CD storage allowed for full motion video, orchestral soundtracks, and game worlds of unprecedented scope. Where the SNES excelled at precision 2D gameplay, the PS1 promised a new dimension entirely — and delivered.

THE NINTENDO 64: POWER VS. PRACTICALITY

The Nintendo 64 launched in September 1996 at $199 and was, in raw technical terms, the most powerful home console of its era. Its 64-bit MIPS R4300i CPU and Reality Co-Processor — built in partnership with Silicon Graphics — could render 3D environments that neither the PlayStation nor the Saturn could match. Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are two of the most acclaimed games ever made. But Nintendo's stubborn insistence on cartridges over CD-ROM proved costly — cartridges were expensive to produce, limited in storage, and drove away third-party developers who needed the space CDs provided. Final Fantasy VII alone, which required three CDs, made the argument for Sony more powerfully than any advertisement could.
